Can you print black and white pages with just a colour ink cartridge?

I ran out of both black and colour ink but when I went to buy some more, they only had colour. I have an assignment due in tomorrow morning and need to print it off with black ink. Is it possible to do this with the colour cartridge and is it advisable? It's a Canon FINE ink.

Thanks. Can you print black and white pages with just a colour ink cartridge?
Yes you can, my black ink ran out and i had just colour ink left. I have an epson printer and that offered me to use the colour ink to mix the colours and create a near enough black ink:) and it worked:) i hope that helps! Can you print black and white pages with just a colour ink cartridge?
It actually depends on the printer model. Many printers can print with one cartridge in some cases mixing the colors to make black. Also as one person already said you could change the font to a very dark color fooling it to use color to make the print. However there are a large number of printers that will not print without having all cartridges full. Generally if they can there will be an option in your printer setup to print using just color cartridge. Also in some cases your printer may actually prompt you on the printer itself asking if you want to print using the cartridge that has ink available.
Don't know why everybody thinks you can!

I've got a Canon and when I completely ran out of black it refused to print until the black cartridge was replaced.

Modern printers now require all the cartridges to have ink in them to print. They are now more sophisticated than they were even 3 years ago!

Black now is only a base colour. Surprisingly there are many shades of black.

Computers now can produce 16,000,000 colours and modern printers have to accommodate that. Especially for photographs and complicated art work!

Even printing in Grey Scale now requires all the Colours to print.

So don't be surprised if the printer actually stops halfway through printing when the black cartridge finally runs completely dry!
Probably depends on the printer. :Like another person who answered your question I have an Epson and when the Black Cartridge runs out you have the option to print in Composite. It will mix the coloured inks to make black.
If you can't find a print black using colour option, you could just make the text colour very very dark brown to fool the printer into printing near black.
Change the font colour to a very dark blue (or any other colour for that matter) and see if it works
Despite most of the posted answers, you can but try

I would be surprised however, IF it works out!!
YES YOU CAN.
