Why doesn't my printer use the black ink cartridge to print black and white photos?

Are all printers this way? All I print is B%26amp;W photos, and it's using up the color ink cartridge instead of the black one... Its a Kodak ESP-3 (I know it sucks, but its what I gotta work with).

Any tips on how to get around this???Why doesn't my printer use the black ink cartridge to print black and white photos?
