if i change HP or Lexmark, it includes the print head, so in effect having a new printer each time i change the cartridge? Is this true. print cartridges- if i replace epson cartridge i am only replacing the ink, where as?
That is partially correct. All Epson printers have internal print heads. This means when you swap out/in new ink cartridges, you are not changing the print heads. Over time print heads clog and/or wear out, so changing your Epson ink cartridges will have no impact on this. With Lexmark and HP printers, the actual print head is usually on the ink cartridge itself. Is this true. print cartridges- if i replace epson cartridge i am only replacing the ink, where as?
Yes all epsons, all brother and some canon printers have print head which is part of the printer. It ';lowers'; the cost of ink but also means that if you have a quality issue, changing the cartridge may not help.
Epson and brother have a fixed head which is a part of the printer and cannot be replaced. Canon printers use a print head which is not fixed and you can actually buy a new print head for your printer. They cost about $100-$150 but do come with a full set of ink.
Not exactly. A new printhead does not equal a new printer. There are other things which fail on inkjets, particularly the waste tank beneath each printer which soaks up excess ink. When it gets full, the printer stops working - even with a new printhead. Anot not all HP and Lexmark include the printhead with the cartridge because that makes the cartridge more expensive. So would you rather pay an extra $5-$10 per cartridge to have your printer last longer or would you rather save the money and just get a new printer every few years? I vote for the latter. I just picked up two Epson NX200 printer/scanner/copiers for $40 each at Officemax. For one year Epson will express-ship a replacement should they fail and pick up the old one at their expense, so for $40 I know they will last at least a year. I get cartridges at http://ccs-digital.com for under $3 each and these hold 66% more ink than standard cartridges. Using the other printers with the expensive cartridges which contain the head would probably cost more than several Epson printers.
On all Epson that I have seen or owed it is only the ink cartridge that is replaced.
If the print-head goes then it is really a throw away as the cost per head is out of this world
It depends on the printer itself, most of the new HP's employ this system aswell as it is cheaper and easier if you're using multiple colours instead of a tri and a black.
Yes.
Epson tanks feed ink to the fixed print head, whereas some others have the print head attached to the tank.
Yes. It means Epsons are really cheap to run, but when the heads become too clogged (like mine did last week), it's bye-bye printer.
