Go to the Control Panel %26amp; open the Printer folder. Right-click on your printer %26amp; select Printing Properties. In that window, click on the Paper/Quality tab %26amp; check the box next to Black %26amp; White. That's for most deskjets. I also have an All-In-One that you go into the Printing Preferences, click the Color tab, then under Color Options, select 'Print in Grayscale'. May not be possible, many printer manufacturers don't allow the printer to operate without both cartridges. This forces you to buy both regularly. Not fair, but that's how they make money.
